slugish and non responsive

When switching desktops all icons show on the new screen and then about 15 seconds later they will adjust to the ones that are supposed to be on the desktop.
Sometimes when I switch desktops the collection of all Icons stays on the desktop even though they are not assigned to that desktop.
When I use Smileys from Windows Live Messenger the selection window never goes away.
sometimes when switching desktops I get an error and thenI notice some of my "always running" apps are closed. always Snagit.
sometimes after that my icons are all on on all desktops

I turned the extras and plugins off thinking they may cause memory problems but it still appears to have problems.
