Windows 10 compatibility

Postby rob.ale90 » 04.02.2015 11:23:42

Hy!

I have a question as subject says. It works on windows 10?

I think dexpot have many features already and windows 10 doesn't have them. One feature i really like is different icons on desktop. Without that i'm not gonna move to windows 10 until dexpot it will work there.

I'm asking this because i want to know if i will install windows10 technical preview or not:D

Thx.

Yeah these features are really cool. A new web browser and Cortana is such a good thing in window 10

Hi,

So, could someone summarise where we are with Windows 10 compatibility now?

One of the posts in this forum refers to the Dexpot website, but I can find nothing about Windows 10 compatibility there.

I was a bit worried because - even though I use and LOVE Dexpot, there doesn't seem to have been a release for well over a year, so of course I wonder if development may have come to an end.

Why do I ask? Because although the virtual desktop features in W10 are welcome, they don't come even close to what Dexpot can offer.

Sadly, Dexpot doesn't work with Windows 10 properly (the problem is similar to problem with modern apps on Windows 8, if you open some of them on a Desktop #1, collapse and then go to a Desktop #2, they can't be restored until you go back to Desktop #1). But now it's the Start menu. Works only on Desktop #1.

So sad I agreed on that Windows 10 update… I sure will miss Dexpot. :(

Oops, looks like I've upset the moderator by asking if Dexpot had ceased development due to the lack of activity on W10 compatibility. My thread has been deleted.

So I guess that's a "yes", then. :(

This saddens me - Dexpot is SO much better than the virtual desktop manager built into W10.

not really. You were just cross-posting (with the same content).

It's a no. I have some free-time until May and start fixing certain issues soon.

Sebastian, that is wonderful news. Thanks for keeping us up to date.

I felt that my two posts were about separate things: one about "Where are we with W10 compatibility?" and the other a more general "Is Dexpot still under development?".

Anyway, no matter - I'm glad to hear that you are still working on it.

Thanks again.

I just installed Windows 10 on my laptop... and then quickly reverted to Windows 8.1(fortunately I had imaged the drive before starting the upgrade :)) because Win 10's internal virtual desktops is pretty terrible, and because Dexpot doesn't work with it yet properly. For one, there's no feature to move windows between the desktops with Win 10's internal virtual desktops — a feature I use all the time. Switching between the desktops in Win 10 is also terribly cumbersome as compared to Dexpot's configurable hotkeys.

When I initially heard that Win 10 would have built-in virtual desktop, I was wondering if it would mean the end of Dexpot, but I now see that there is no such hazard. As long as Dexpot's Win 10 issues are resolved, it continues to be a useful part of any power user's toolkit! :)

I love dexpot, but I've moved to W10 because I use Surface computers. In the interest of correctness I thought I would comment on two of your points.

Point 1. Yes you can move windows between desktops using TaskView. You just start taskview and drag the window to the desktop. Or you can drag it to the "New Desktop" icon and it will make a new desktop for that window.

Point 2. You can move windows between Windows 10 virtual desktops with hotkeys. No they are not configurable in the OS, but they are fine CTL+Win+Left/Right. And if you want you can configure them using AutoHotKey.

Do you have a ballpark idea as to when the Win 10 compatible version may be out? Few weeks? Few months? I have to reinstall my system, and I'd like to go to Win 10, but Dexpot is a critical utility.. if it'll be months before the updated version, I'll go for 8.1 instead. Thanks! :)

Yes, Win10's built-in virtual desktops are better than none at all, but unfortunately they are rather cumbersome to use as compared to Dexpot. Maybe in time one would get used to it, but I still like the configurability of Dexpot a lot better. (nod)

Is there any problem with Dexpot on 10 apart from the Apps issue?

I don't use modern apps and I've been running Dexpot for a couple of days with no problems at all. Personally, what I really like about Dexpot is the ability to make desktops permanent.

At least on my first attempt to use it with Windows 10 many programs did not stick on the desktop I had set them on. In other words, if I opened Outlook on desktop 1, and then switched to desktop 2, Outlook window would not go away – it would be visible on all four desktops. Same was the case on many more programs than with Windows 8.1 (there are few less commonly used programs that seem to do that). That was the biggest problem (others not seeing it?). The apps issue is not as significant, as I'm not really using that many modern apps yet, either, although the number is probably going to go up as time goes by.

there are some minor issues, yes.

We're currently bringing the Bug-Tracker to life again (besides other applications running on our web server as you may have noticed with the updated forum). Will go live with a link below the forum's support sections once the server transition is complete.

please see our FAQ, nothing 10-specific if I get your description right.

Reinstalled Windows 10, set Dexpot to run as Admin, and it's working as expected. Thanks!
