Hi Dexpot,
I apologise for the inconvenience but please ignore/delete the message posted as Back_delirium1, I was having some problems trying to login.
(I know this is a long post but don't let it put you off, there's only actually 2 problems (that I hope are minor), I just have a habit of rambling on a bit... I would be incomprehensibly grateful for any help regarding either issue!)
I'll start off by saying that I've thought for a long time that windows should incorporate multiple desktops (not just multiple monitors) into their operating systems but I thought it was just me that was looking for that feature, so when I found your program I was pleased as punch!
Unfortunately though, I am running into a couple of issues.
Before I go further it might just be worth mentioning that I'm running an ASUS EeePC X101CH netbook with Windows 7 Starter 32-bit. Also, the version of Dexpot I'm using is 1.6.0.6 and I only have 2 desktops, as opposed to the default 4.
The first problem I encountered was with the impressive feature that allows you to change backgrounds for independent desktops. As you'll know, Windows 7 Starter doesn't give you the option to change a background at all. On my old netbook I used Stardock to counter this problem but that doesn't seem to offer as many free features as it used to and so I found Oceanis which has worked fine. Dexpot doesn't seem to be able to overwrite the default background of W7S though, as some other programs can, and so even though I've chosen two individual wallpapers in the "Configure Desktops", "Background" menus.
I presumed that others must have had this problem as Dexpot is the perfect program for netbooks and most of them run on W7S, and sure enough I found a couple of other posts on this forum.
This one;
dexpot.de/forum/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=3333
first suggests that a plugin developer was making a plugin to allow this feature to work with W7S, but as that post was in June 2011 and he didn't post any further replies, I presume their noble task wasn't completed? The original poster then points and readers towards;
http://answers.microsoft.com/
I thought this might actually be a complete solution for the problem, but it seems that all their solution does is change the default background that W7S forces you to have and does not allow you to use the multiple desktop backgrounds feature of Dexpot.
I also found this post;
viewtopic.php?f=12&t=2891
But this unfortunate soul was never replied to.
Can someone please just tell me straight whether or not there is a way that you can use Dexpot to create individual backgrounds for individual desktops on a W7S system?
The other problem I'm experiencing is that a few desktop icons have appeared on Desktop 2 (they weren't originally there) and I do not seem able to delete them without also deleting them from Desktop 1.
This problem has also been experienced by at least one other user;
viewtopic.php?f=12&t=3057
but the solution on the this page suggests I go here;
viewtopic.php?f=21&t=1839
I've watched the video umpteen times now and, besides the fact that it doesn't actually show you how to remove unwanted desktop items from specific desktops, my drag and drop through the "Desktop Manager" does not work with any icon. (If I try to drag an icon to a specific desktop I just get a red circle with a line through it like a "No Entry" sign.
There was another thread that suggested that I reduce the number of desktops to 1 in the "Settings" menu, but the minimum I can have is one. The poster of the suggestion said that Dexpot automatically populates multiple desktops but I'm sure when I first installed the program that none of the additional desktops had anything on them so I don't know why a few icons have taken root there now.
Can someone please explain where I'm going wrong or what I need to do for me to be able to remove selected desktop icons and also be able to move icons between desktops easier (at the moment I have to open the folder "Desktop" then "Desktop 2" and drag icons over. It might be worth noting that the icons I want to delete from Desktop 2 are not in either desktop folder.)
If there is any further information that anyone requires in order to help me then just ask.
Many thanks in advance,
Ben

1. No, individual desktop backgrounds are not supported on Windows 7 Starter.
2. The icons that are visible on all desktops are the ones stored in C:\Users\Public\Desktop.

Hi Patrick,
Straight forward answers, that's great (even if it you did confirm my fears over problem one. Will have to make sure my next netbook has at least W7-HP).
One more small thing though regarding problem two. The "My Computer" and "Recycle Bin" are still present on the 2nd desktop. Can this be changed? As I mentioned in my first post, I'm sure that when I first installed Dexpot the 2nd (as well as 3rd and 4th) desktop was completely clear but I'm not sure if perhaps windows has automatically added them upon restart?
Thank you immensely for your swift, simple answers in response to my slightly over-the-top post. I look forward to your advice on my extra (and hopefully final) question.

change to Use a shared common folder for all desktops if you want a blank second desktop.
