Windows 8 searching in new Start menu

Postby harrycox » 20.11.2012 16:36:06

I have Dexpot set up with 2 desktops. If I'm in desktop #1 and bring up the Windows 8 start menu and begin typing, nothing happens, I can only search from desktop #2. Is there any way around this?

:dex:

You mean the new Modern UI (aka Metro) start screen that comes with Windows 8, and not some third-party add-on, right?

Here's what we tried: Dexpot 1.6.4 with default settings and no other programs running on Windows 8.

  • Switch to desktop 1
  • Press the Windows key
  • Start typing -> search works as expected
  • Return to the desktop
  • Switch to desktop 2
  • Press the Windows key
  • Start typing -> search works as expected
Any ideas?

Yes, the Windows Metro start menu. I thought the problem had gone away, but it seems to be back. It doesn't always happen and a reboot always fixes it. If I'm in desktop 1 and type in the start menu, nothing happens. If I close the start menu, you can see in the desktop preview pager that the start menu search thing has appeared in desktop #2. If I switch to desktop #2 the search remains open, but produces no results if you type in it. I attached a picture of the pager.

I see the same issue. Search on the start screen only works if on desktop one (I have 6 desktops in 2 rows via DexGrid) for me.

By 'search on the start screen' I mean hit the Windows key to bring up the start screen, and start typing. Expected behavior is that the search box shows on the right when you start typing. Nothing appears if I'm not on desktop one. I'm sure it's dexpot as the search box will show up if I hit the keyboard shortcut I have defined to switch to desktop one it appears (the shortcut doesn't switch away from the start screen - just makes the search charm appear).

Repros on 2 machines with clean windows 8 install.

What's the option "Settings > Plugins and Extras > Behavior of windows on other desktops" set to?

Likewise. I get more orphaned (can't click on them - have to kill with task manager) windows if it is set otherwise, which mainly happens when there's a desktop switch just as windows are created or given focus.

Great to hear it will be fixed soon.
