Switch desktops: MRU behavior

Postby lujomu » 07.08.2010 01:14:52

Hello!

I'm a quite new Dexpot user (switched from another desktop manager recently) and I already like it that much, that I took the time to post this feature suggestion here: ;)

I think a good addition would be the possibility to switch the desktops in the MRU (most recently used) order, just like the built-in [ALT]-[TAB] task switcher in windows. I know you already can assign a hotkey to the command 'Back', but this only brings you back to the very last used desktop. And that means you can only switch back and fourth between two desktops at a time.

The MRU behaviour includes that functionality, but goes much further. For the following explanation I assume that this MRU switching was assigned to the hotkey [ALT]+[Q]. As long as [ALT] is pressed down you can cycle through your last used desktops using [Q].

E.g. let's say you just started Dexpot and use four desktops (D1 to D4), so your MRU list would look like this (brackets marking the currently shown desktop):
[D1] D2 D3 D4
If you hit [ALT]-[Q] now, you would switch to D2. (Until now the behavior is similar to the 'Back' command, with the exception that the 'Back' command does noting if you haven't already switched to another desktop before!):
[D2] D1 D3 D4
If you hit [ALT]-[Q] again, you go back to D1 and the list looks just like at the program start:
[D1] D2 D3 D4
BUT if you hit the [ALT] key and keep it pressed, hit [Q] once switches to D2:
D1 [D2] D3 D4
With the [ALT] key still pressed, hitting [Q] again brings you now to D3:
D1 D2 [D3] D4
If you release [ALT] now you stay on D3 and the MRU list is rearranged to reflect your choice:
[D3] D1 D2 D4

I hope you get the idea. This functionality would make it possible to manage multiple desktops with only one single hotkey!

Looking forward to your opinion ... and sorry for the long post!
