Running an application on a desktop when I enter it

I want to start a application automatically when I first enter the desktop. I have put

"C:\Program Files\ExpertGPS\ExpertGPS.exe"

into the startup command window for Desktop3 (GPS)

but I can not get it to run, what am I doing wrong or am I trying to do somthing it is not meant to do?

Is there any way to save the windows layout on a desktop so that when you reboot the laptop each desktop as you reenter it restores the window layout as it was before? It would be great to be able to auto launch apps in each desktop that remembered the position and window size that was set before it was ended last time. Great application by the way, really do like this on the laptop (Windows 2000 SP4)

I use a program (AutoHotkey) creating macros that can start automatically every time I enter into a desktop.
Create the macro, then go to select Configure desktops, then select the tab Start-up and loads the macro indicating if you want to do any input or just the first time

Exactly, but it does not work, at least in Win7 64 for me!
