1928 and DexControl, Thank you dexpot team!

Postby woomera » 23.04.2012 10:48:22

WOW this release is much faster, smoother and consumes even less memory.
never could actually use dexpot before, even earlier beta releases. always laggy and slow in response but this release its all fixed.
and dexcontrol, I LOVE IT. this is officially way more feature rich than mac os version.

just wanted to Thank Dexpot team for the great job they're doing.

Regards,

Not so sound super ingrate since I LOVE dexcontrol. The one thing I was jealous of on Macs is now in Windows too :)

But would it be possible to get some configuration options to speed up the animation or disable it altogether?

DexControl looks great. :) Especially with moving programs from one screen to another, it works just right. :ok: Yeah an option or two for the animations would be a nice future feature. Also, if the mouse if focused on one desktop minature and is quickly moved to another then clicked right away, the click may not register because it was too fast or something.

Btw, I just happened to notice that if set to just two desktops, DexCube starts to do the flipp'ing instead of cube'ing. Not a biggie.

What? We went through all that trouble to get the animations as smooth and pleasant as possible, and now you want to get rid of them? :D

At the moment it only registers as a click when there is no movement between button down and button up.

That's because it's not actually cubing, but n-sided-prism-ing.

I like the animations. I just want to make them faster :)

I have actually started using dexcontrol almost as the main window manager. I use it to switch from many windows, I use it to move windows across monitors, to move windows across desktop and monitors (greatest feature ever!) and even to select one of the 10-15 terminal windows I keep open!

There is one issue with W8 CP which you may or may not care about. The dexcontrol.exe seems to create a taskbar button. Interestingly I can then also launch dexcontrol by clicking the button. This doesn't seem to happen on W7.

On Windows 8 the animations are really fast and smooth even with 30-40 windows open. My W7 machine has a crappy mobile GPU and even then the animations are almost perfect.

Also:
1. Are you using the thumbnail api from Aero? If so I wonder if it would be possible to get the previews of the tabs from IE also?

2. I don't know if its even possible but could dexcontrol be extended to do something similar with Metro apps?

edit:
1 other small bug I found. On a multi monitor setup the scroll through all open windows with mouse wheel function only works on one of the monitors. And oddly enough not the main monitor either.

I think DexControl is great and the version that you attached did improve the performance, however, I think there is still quite a bid of lag. For example, I have a Intel Core i5 2520M processor (8 GB ram) and when I click on one of the desktops from the "Full Screen Preview", there is still a slight lag when zooming in. This is normally ok, but if my laptop is running on battery (and in Power Saver Mode), then this lag becomes pretty bad. Looking at the task manager, I can see that the CPU usage of DexControl increases substantially during this process. Furthermore, if I switch between desktops too quickly, the program seems to crash and I can no longer switch between desktops (I can get to full-screen preview, but clicking on a desktop, doesn't do anything).
Therefore if you don't think further optimization/caching is possible, then an option to turn off the animation may resolve this problem.

Again, thank you for developing a great product.

DexControl heavily relies on the GPU. Does your laptop have integrated graphics?

Do you see the CPU usage or memory consumption go up?

Sorry for the late reply Sebastian, I have been really busy in the past week and completely forgot to respond.

No, my laptop uses ATI 6470M dedicated graphics. There is no switable graphics, so the ATI chip is always used.

Do you see the CPU usage or memory consumption go up?

Yes, there is a noticeable increase in CPU usage and memory consumption. In power save mode (effects are less obvious in High Performance mode), the CPU is normally idle at 1%. Opening the full screen preview causes a temporary spike to 30%. Closing it (selecting a desktop) cases a spike to 40%. The memory usage also temporarily goes up to 20MB (from 3MB) while the preview is open (there is no memory leak though, it goes back down to 3MB after the preview closes).

As a comparison, opening the desktop catalog only causes a 5-10% increase in CPU usage.

Let me know if I can provide any additional information that might assist you.
