Dexpot control functions

I am new to Dexpot and am having trouble getting it to work properly. I have set up 5 desktops with customized backgrounds.
Very often when I open a window in one desktop it also opens in all the others, and I do not know how to prevent this. Commanding it to close in other desktop, either thru the window bar (which may or may not be there) or the Desktop Windows box, does not have any affect. What am I missing?
