Can't Revert Desktop Icons Back to Normal

I had been using the "Customize Desktop Icons" option for a while, but now I want to switch back to normal and now my desktop icons are all gone, only a few default shortcuts are left. My icons only come back when I turn custom desktop icons back on, but then I don't have all of my icons back on every desktop...

Assuming default settings (separate folder for each desktop, Windows desktop as desktop 1), when you disable icon customization, the icons of the desktop you're currently on should remain and become the new permanent desktop. Is that what happens?

If so, re-enable "Customize desktop icons", switch to desktop 1, move all icons to desktop 1 (e.g. using "Desktop Windows"), then disable icon customization again.

Oh OK. I thought that the Windows desktop would become the new permanent desktop upon turning off the option. I've got everything back to normal now, thanks!
