My desktops are separate. So when I copy a shortcut on one desktop and paste it into another desktop it cant find the original file and comes up with an error. Any way around this?

No, that's an unfortunate Windows limitation. You could open the source desktop in Windows Explorer (e.g. C:\Users\%username%\Desktop 2) and then copy and paste the file to your current desktop.
