Icons don't move, they are just copied

Postby sbmuser » 14.07.2010 22:15:43

Hello,

I have a problem with Dexpot: the icons refuse to move!
I mean, the icons do get copied over to the target desktop, but stay on the the main desktop. They are not distributed, simply copied.

Also, when I tried to move icons manually, by going to the Icons tab in Desktop Windows, they don't show up!

I don't know how to fix this. HELP!

Hi, :dex:

can you describe how exactly you are trying to move the icons? Also, what version of Windows do you use?

Hi, thanks for responding.

I use Windows 7. Before you ask, yes I do know about the UAC bug. However, this doesn't work even with UAC off.

This problem has sorta morphed into a different problem.
I can now see the icons in the Desktop Windows window.

Here's what happens. I first tried to drag and drop like the video tutorial showed.
Doesn't work.
Then I tried cutting and pasting the icons, I don't know why I did that.
I made sure to enable desktop customization.

When I couldn't find another way, I checked a help file here that told me about the Desktop Windows window that could manually move each icon.

I turned UAC off.
I do just that. I move the icons by going to Desktop Windows, clicking on the Icons tab, enabling desktop customization, right-clicking on each icon and moving it to the desired desktop. At first, even that didn't work. The icons were just copied. So then I just went to the Overview option at the bottom. All icons were present on all desktops. I just right-clicked and pressed Remove to remove icons from each desktop that I didn't want. The icons do move off the current desktop-meaning, they disappeared from the desktop.

With UAC still off, I tried to move an icon to another position on one of my desktops. Here's what happens in response:
1. All the icons come back to the same layout that they were in before they were moved for about two seconds, where the icons were copied across all desktops. Then, the desktop icons move again back to the NEW distributed layout that I made BEFORE I moved the icon to another position. The icon didn't change position like I wanted.
2. After a number of tries to move it, or just some incident, the whole thing collapses, and the icons are back to their normal layout, with copies of icons on all desktops. The icons are no longer distributed.

Another freak incident is where ALL desktop icons disappear. When I check the Desktop Windows-Icons Tab, there are no icons present on desktop. They are all in the Removed section. What happens is that the icons flicker between being on the desktop and being Removed. I fix this by selecting all icons in the Removed panel and placing them on the current desktop.

Thanks for your help!

"1. All the icons come back to the same layout that they were in before they were moved for about two seconds, where the icons were copied across all desktops. Then, the desktop icons move again back to the NEW distributed layout that I made BEFORE I moved the icon to another position. The icon didn't change position like I wanted. "

What I mean is, the desktop icons "snap to" (remember, it's Windows 7) their original places. Icons that I had previously removed come back and "push" the icon in its place downwards. This desktop icon arrangement is the same layout that I had when I had copies of icons on all desktops. They stay in this position for a couple seconds. Then, the desktop icons that I had removed, DO get removed and the desktop icons revert back to the arrangement that I had before I moved the icon. I'm sorry if this doesn't make sense.

By the way,

The icons no longer flicker:
Example:
1. I move a couple of icons to Desktop 2
2. I move an icon on Desktop 1 to another location on the same desktop.
3. The desktop icons from desktop 2 reappear on desktop 1. This time they do not go back to desktop 2, they just stay on desktop 1.

Yeah, I'm not finding it. I kept the "show hidden files" on so that they do show, and such, but I'm not still not finding it. The only files in the Appdata/Roaming/Dexpot folder are standard.dxi and
#username#.dxi. When I look inside the Profiles folder I only find standard.dxp

Sorry.

SOLVED!!!

Postby sbmuser » 23.07.2010 05:20:10

I SOLVED IT!

When you mentioned profiles, that brought something to mind I had read about icon distribution and profiles. I checked out the help file on icon distribution, and I went down to the profiles section.

After a little bit of tinkering I found the problem: I never saved my icon distribution! For some reason that was never done...Until now!

It must have been a freak thing to happen like that. I mean, I would think that profiles are saved automatically with icon distribution and everything. Icon distribution now works fine. There is no more flickering of desk icons.

Thank you so much for your help Sebastian! Quite honestly, if you hadn't mentioned my profile file, I wouldn't have thought of it!

Thanks again for making Dexpot awesome again! :)

Here's how I fixed it:
1. Start Dexpot
2. Right click on the dexpot icon in the system tray and select Settings
3. In the General tab, you should see at the bottom a section called PROFILES
4. In normal circumstances, the profile should save your icon distribution automatically. However, in my-and probably your-case, it doesn't save it automatically, and thus the icons don't stay distributed.
5. Here's the fix: you'll see buttons below the CHOOSE PROFILE menu: Load, Save, Save As, etc.
Click Save As and save it as any profile name.
6. Now that profile includes your distributed icons, and the icons should now STAY distributed.

Hope that helps :)
