Wierd drawing problem

Hello,

At least once a day I get a thick black line of various size on one my desktops (I have a screen shot I can email). It seems to happen randomly and with different applications open (windows explorer, opera, putty, outlook, etc...).

Let me know where I can email the screen shot as you will be able to see what I'm talking about.

That's obviously an XP menu shadow. :wink:

Do you use mouse switch or hotkeys to switch desktops?

I get very similar persistant XP shadows, most often from tooltips, but also from menus.

Yes, I'm using hotkeys to switch desktops: ALT+[cursor keys]

not fatal, but kind of annoying to have an alpha mask stuck over your editor.

I've turned off XP shadows. I'll report back with results in a few days. I haven't seen anything problems since turning them off yesterday.

Try F5, this should refresh the desktop and get rid of the lines that XP often leaves.

Tried that, didn't help

. However, turning off XP shadows seems to have "fixed" the problem. I haven't gotten a single drawing problem since I switched it off.

Shadows are turned off from the Display Properties Dialog -> Appearance Tab -> Effects Button. Unselect "Show shadows under menus" in the resulting dialog box.

Actually the 'drawing problems' are transparent top-level windows (class 'SysShadow'). That's why F5 won't work...

For the record, I had the same problem, and also solved it by turning off shadows. As far as I could tell, it only ever happened with the Start menu shadow, but that may be just because the Start menu gets used more.

It's still happpening. It seems to be getting worst. Here's another picture of the same issue but when I was trying to post an image in paint it started happening again. So it's not just firefox.

I notice that when I switch to another desktop, they go away... and then switch back to the original desktop, they are back again! Evil shadows!

They also seem to be much more common on the desktop I use more often... but I can't seem to "force" them to happen... they just happen.

They are taking over my desktop.

Edit: In addition, if I close Dexpot and reopen it, the lines remain on the desktop while dexpot is closed, and still remain after it's restarted. Also, if I switch to a different desktop that doesn't have the shadows and close dexpot, all the lines come back even then.

I can duplicate it for the start menu fairly easily:
0. Press the start key
1. Use the start key + 2 to send the start menu to a new desktop
2. The start menu should have switched desktops.
3. All desktops should now have the start menu shadow.

Confirmed... It does exactly that without fail for the start menu...

It doesn't seem to happen (at least not as consistently) for other menus in apps or tooltips... not sure how I'm getting them all over my screen...

I was experiencing the stuck start menu shadow when switching desktops as described above. It was something I would do accidentally every now and then, but I'd get that nasty line on the desktop. Turning off shadows seems to fix the problem.

it gets worse on Windows Vista... When using the Live Full Screen Preview with maximized windows on some desktops, the whole screen will look blank. Only minimizing and restoring will bring them back in working order
