Profile help

Postby Rossputin » 30.05.2012 19:06:33

Hello all,

I'm trying Dexpot for the first time and liking it so far, but having one issue. I imagine the answer is already out there but I'm unable to find it so I hope you'll be willing to answer what is probably a fairly basic question:

I ran Dexpot, then started an application which creates something like 30 windows.

I moved the windows to various places across Dexpot's 4 virtual desktops.

I saved a profile in Dexpot and saved the layout within the application itself.

But when I restart the computer, loading Dexpot first and then the application, the many windows are all back on the first desktop. When I switch to another Dexpot desktop, the icon for the application is also no longer in the task bar.

How can I make my application's window locations within Dexpot permanent, so that the stuff I moved to desktop 2 will be on desktop 2 again the next time, etc?

Thanks,
Ross K

:dex:,

thank you for your feedback, Ross.
There's mainly 3 ways you can distribute windows automatically.

1. Using 'Application assignment' in Dexpot 1.6 Beta.
2. Starting your applications via Dexpot, see 'Configure Desktop > Start-Up'.
3. Using 'Desktop Rules', see chapter 3.5 in the Quick Start Guide.

Thanks for the answer, Sebastian.

The application assignment seems like it will put the whole application in one window. I have one program that generates about 30 windows.

What is the most effective way of saving the layout where I distribute the windows over the 4 desktops so I can have the same setup each time?

Thanks again,
Ross

seems that the best way to go is via 'Desktop Rules'.
What's the application's name?

no trial available. :dumdiedum:
Do the windows you're trying to group on different desktops have a significant name, suffix or prefix?

Yep, each window has it's own name.

I've tried starting to work with the desktop rules...it's a long process. haven't yet tried restarting to see if it will not only automatically move the windows to the right desktop, but move them to the right place on the right desktop.

what i really would like is to be able to create one rule which moves multiple windows, i.e. one rule for everything I want to move to Desktop 2, one rule for Desktop 3, etc.

Is that possible?

Also, do the rules run all the time, always looking for a window of a certain name?

Thanks again!

:dex:,

you may apply rules manually to see if they work.
You cannot put windows to a specific position on a desktop (yet).

Desktop Rules check for newly created windows (title, window class, *.exe name).
