Confirmed... It does exactly that without fail for the start menu...

It doesn't seem to happen (at least not as consistently) for other menus in apps or tooltips... not sure how I'm getting them all over my screen...

http://www.dfx.org/screenshot.png :( I notice that when I switch to another desktop, they go away... and then switch back to the original desktop, they are back again! Evil shadows! They also seem to be much more common on the desktop I use more often... but I can't seem to "force" them to...
