save your 1.5-settings to a profile.
Install the 1.6 Beta to a different folder.

It's quite stable, yes.

Would I be able to install the new beta without disturbing the existing 1.5 for testing?

I'm sure I could manually do this, but wondering if there's anything special I need to look out for. Also, would you call this 1.6 Beta reasonably stable at this point?
