Just for the record: Metacity appears not to be one of them. :P

Many *ix WMs enable you to right-click the maximize button and indicate maximizing in just one direction -- vertically or horizontally. Very useful when you change screen resolutions (I do it daily with my laptop and external monitor), or for windows that stupidly refuse to remember you stretched them the last time.
