these are default files. Uncheck 'Show hidden files, folders and drives', check 'Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)' if you don't want them to be displayed.
Sebastian-thanks for writing. Sorry but this is not a solution - I want to see the protected files, and in any case, this ONLY started since I upgraded to the last 2227 build. I have been running Windows 8 in various forms since almost 1 year with Dexpot and with all system files visible, and it was never a problem til the last build. These icons are appearing ON my Desktop on the screen, (I don't care about various directories and subdirectories). Something has changed. I guess it is possible it might be connected to the large MS patches last week but I am pretty sure it only started since the last Dexpot upgrade. AND since I uninstalled Dexpot (still keeping the show hidden files enabled) the problem has stopped. That surely suggests something in the latest build.
Is anyone else experiencing this?? ThanksBut the uninstall is not clean - it leaves a Desktop 4 in my User profile. If I delete this, I lose ALL desktop icons. It is as if this "4" has become the new default. Only way to fix is a full system recovery.
We leave the desktop folders untouched to avoid data loss. If you find those folders in your user profile, you had the Dexpot icon customization enabled ('Settings > Switching Desktops > Customize desktop icons'). Enable it, switch to the first desktop and you should have your icons back.
OK thanks - I thought it might be connected to the customization, just assumed this would be removed during an uninstall. BUT-if I want to, how do I safely remove it? Does this mean I have to reinstall Dexpot, then allow customization, run it, then DISALLOW?? Should not a full uninstall also remove this? A little unclear. Thanks
