How virtual desktops work? By hiding and showing windows.

I am using a program which requires a server component when accessing the program over a network, or using windows Remote Desktop Connection functionality. It does not require the server component when accessing using web based remote such as logmein.com.

Trying to access the program locally asks for server component. Developer has asked how Dexpot is creating the virtual windows.

Please advise.
