profile save load freezes computer Win98SE

Hello,
When I go to load or save a profile, my computer crashes and I have to do a shut off and restart. Win98SE. Thanks for any ideas about what to do.
Do I need the profiles? What do they do? Are they just saving my configurations? Could I just save a registry export instead if profile save and load is not working for me.
